Wikipedia raises millions in donations

Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia founder was pleased to announce that his Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization behind Wikipedia, has passed its fundraising goal for 2008 of $6 million. As of today, $6.2 million has been raised by over 125,000 donors.

Wales posted an appeal last month. In December alone, $2 million was raised. The money will take them through their fiscal year this June.Wales' thank you letter, explains where the money will go.

Wales forgoes advertising and feels that the donations are a better way to go for Wikipedia. It seems to work.
